This isn't travel per se, but it wouldn't have happened without my various trips to Japan, and it's a place to put a bunch of photos rather than sending them over disperate chat apps to the couple of people that might be interested.
After mentioning my interest in Bonsai I received a gift voucher from my parents for Christmas.
My helper and I headed down to Collector's Corner at Garden World which in addition to having a large range of fossils, cacti and dinosaur statues, boasts it has the largest range of Bonsai in Australia or some such.
After a trip there and one to Bunnings, I now have this.
I have a range of already potted stuff, the largest of which is this Cedar.
through this kind of blurry maple
A chinese elm
A juniper
And this thing, which is nicknamed the "tree of 1000 stars" because of the large volume of small white flowers it sports in summer, or something.
In addition I have a few in plastic tubs to be transplanted to pots, including another Juniper
Another Maple
And another Cedar, that my helper insists is going in a greenish pot, and being covered in bright green pebbles, as opposed to the blue pot/black pebbles theme I've got going on otherwise.
I also have a selection of seeds to try and turn into seedlings. So I might update at some later stage with how it's all going. Assuming I don't kill everything in the mean time.
To aid with the not killing, I've hooked up a sprinkler/mister system
Which is on a timer, so as long as I remember to turn down the frequency of watering in winter, I should be able to keep them alive for a while.
Update:
I've added a solar powered pump and run the hose up through some bamboo.
Now I just need to find a modestly sized shishi odoshi
They look great!
ReplyDeleteAt what stage to you start pruning/training them or is it different for species?
During summer, when they are doing the most growing apparently, so it's probably just coming out of the end of major pruning season.
