The Philatelist

It turns out that my travelling companion is something of a philatelist

She has a cute little coin purse to keep her coin collection in.
She's very proud of what looks to me to be about 35 cents worth of quite tarnished coins.

She read on the internet that there was a coin exhibit at the Hokkaido bank museum, so we went to check that out.

The museum in Kanazawa also had a section on currency.

Don't worry. I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only joking. I know that a philatelist isn't someone that collects coins (that's a subset of numismatics), it's someone who collects stamps.

She's obsessed with collecting stamps, she got a book especially to put them in and everything.

Luckily Japan has stamps everywhere.

This stamp was at the top of the Government building in Shinjuku at the observation deck.

There was a stamp in the Brickworks store in Hakodate, but we'd wandered around separately and she'd already got the stamp by the time we met up, so have this picture of a cake display that was nearby instead.

The bottom of the Ropeway in Hakodate

At the top of the ropeway. You might think the ropeway thinks too highly of itself with this two stamps business. After you see some of the places that have stamps, you might be of the opinion that they should shoot for three,

The Hakodate tower used to have a stamp according to the internet

It was missing, although several things had been labelled as "removed due to corona virus" so it was probably a victim of that.

The Hakodate morning market had a stamp.

I'm not sure if stamping the morning market stamp at 11pm at night is some sort of stamping faux pas.

but since someone needed to pee we'd broken in to use the bathroom, and while I was standing around waiting I spotted the stamp pad.

The Skytree in Sapporo has a stamp

which seems vaguely reasonable

some places provide a blank spot on their pamphlet specifically for the stamp

stamp basket theft is clearly an issue,

The parallel museum had not one, but five stamps

They were part of a stamp rally. If you got all five on the sheet provided you could hand it in for a small prize. All five stamps were in inconvenient places that only opened at 11am and so I don't think she ever got any of them.

A stamp at the entryway to a crab restaurant in Sapporo. She's stamping away while I'm waiting to see if there is a table free. (There isn't, but jokes on them because she stamped her book anyway!)

The historical village has a stamp

Someone seems unreasonably pleased with their stamping technique

stampy stampy

The chocolate factory has a stamp

Chunk

Good day Sir. I said good day!

At the science museum

The planetarium has a stamp

People are forced to queue behind the woman stamping her book so that they can get in to the planetarium and take their seats. It's not like they lock the doors when the show starts and you can't get in after that or anything, so stamp away!

The main foyer also has stamps

In fact the science museum has 12 stamps (in addition to the planetarium one)

I think someone is having a Stampgasm

This took a while

The look of someone well and truly stamped out who needs a cigarette

After that, the sake museum at the otakayama brewery was a bit of a stamp tease

There were official company stamps in the museum, but no actual stamp you could stamp into a book.

Asahikawa station

Train station stamps are probably the most common

This station has one

I think it's worth noting that this is just some random station in Sapporo

This is like if Clayton station had a commemorative stamp

The finance museum has a stamp

it was even a fancy stamping machine

Impressive

Because people can't leave the ink pad open to dry out, it stamps a good stamp

Nagano subway has a stamp

The small pieces of paper they provide for stamping re weighted down by a bolt wrapped in electrical tape

The tunnel the stamp is in is in a direct line with the platform so wind blows down it every time a train arrives

Obuse, a tiny town in the middle of nowhere has a stamp

nothing as far as the eye can see

and yet, they deem themselves stamp worthy

The Hokusai museum has several stamps

In fact, we're forced to wait for other stamp tragics to finish stamping before we can stamp stuff ourselves and then get on with our lives.

Did I say several?

Yudanaka Onsen has a stamp at the station

Jizzo the deity of stopping smoking doesn't have a stamp

He has a rubbing

We're not sure we're equipped for rubbings

we give it a bash anyway

Hmmm

The museum in Kanazawa has a stamp

They practice good inkpad hygiene (keeping it closed and wet) and so it stamps a good stamp

We approve

The book of stamps

I think the rubbing got stamped over

some of the pieces of paper that were stamped separately are tucked in the back of the book

as was this ticket permitting entry to a museum, that was stamped by the staff upon entry.
Every stamp counts I guess.

Thus concludes our vague insight into the phenomenon that is Stamp collecting in Japan.

Edit
A bonus stamp photo SMSed to me from Narita Airport
