This long corridor that connects the station to something or other (possibly the other side of itself) is often decorated for specific events
This time is had a giant wall of screens displaying a cool colored pattern.
The pillars in the middle cycled to match
After a while it changed to this mountain scene
and the pillars changed to match
It's for the 20th anniversary of this series of magical girl anime shows.
Apparently if we had hung around long enough they would have all been displayed on the wall.
I have no idea how long the cycle is and how long we would have had to have waited for it to happen.
There was quite the number of people hanging around waiting for it, so maybe it takes ages, maybe they just wanted to watch it many many times.

I didn't stay to find out.
We went up to the the observation deck to watch the sun set behind Mt Fuji
(the peak in on the right side of the picture at about the 2/3rds mark)

after the sun went down, you could see a bunch of the winter illuminations from up top.
A word of warning. If you're not a fan of lights wrapped around trees, you're probably not going to enjoy 75% of the rest of this trip. It's just what happens in Japan in winter.

A small grove of illuminated trees in the garden of a nearby office building.
Illuminated bushes
The NTT Docomo building
more lit up trees, as seen from space.
You could even see some colorfully lit up trees in a gap between two of the office buildings.
Foreshadowing!

The grove of trees close up.
The little white lights hanging from the branches are animated.
I have video, but I might do a post of video stuff later, when I have better internet.

Never work with children or animals or confused women.
(It took ages to get her to stand slightly behind the tree so she was lit by it, instead of shrouded in shadow)

Even the observation tower is getting in on the illumination action.
Outside another office tower
Illuminated trees
Illuminated bushes
The trees outside our hotel getting their lit on.
A row of colorfully lit trees. I imagine that behind me, through a gap in some buildings, an observation tower is visible.
This street of trees heads into Shinjuku proper and eventually the trees get drowned out amidst the neon glare of a stereotypical Tokyo nighttime street scene.
Some mor illuminations south of the station
They go for quite some distance.
At one point there is a little illuminated path off to one side
IT's a sort of little foot bridge that goes across nothing.
There were a bunch of these balls, which seemed to be made of plastic with interesting optical properties wrapped up into a sort of sphere.
As well as some gem shaped things.

We had dinner nearby on the 13th Floor of a Departo (Department Store)
which had it's own illuminations in a little roof top garden.

They even had a little fountain thing.
Bonus Mini Blog: What were you thinking logo designers?
Saw this at Shinjuku station.
No idea what dog spice is, but I'm keen to try it.

This was outside near the illuminations with the shiny balls.
I suspect these people knew exactly what they were doing (it appears to be a US company originally).
The spice factory people not so much.
